BMW i3 release date, price and now official pictures leaked
The BMW i3 electric car has leaked ahead of its official world unveiling on Monday 29 July. These pictures reveal a car that’s still recognizable as the original i3 concept, albeit with a little less glass and a bit more bodywork.
We do get our first glimpse of the production interior, though, revealing a suitably futuristic and eco-friendly approach. The dashboard looks as though it uses reclaimed materials in its construction, and all of the dials are replaced by a simple screen ahead of the driver.
In our drive of a prototype i3, the car didn’t have a steering column mounted gearstick but it’s clear to see in this interior shot. That frees up plenty of space between the seats, especially considering there’s no transmission tunnel.
The i3 is rear-wheel drive, powered by a 168bhp electric motor and is expected to weigh less than 1,200kg thanks to a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic and aluminium construction. BMW is targeting a range of around 80-100 miles and a 0-62mph time of 7.2 seconds.
It’s not known whether it will be offered immediately from launch but BMW will also introduced a range-extender version which includes a 650cc two-cylinder motor cycle engine to double the range.
First deliveries of the BMW i3 will be in November, with prices set to cost from £25,680 including a £5,000 contribution from the government. Buyers can also lease an i3 by putting down a deposit of £2,995 and paying £369 per month over 36 months. Buyers can also choose to loan an X5 or a Z4 for a limited period of time depending on their needs.
The i3 will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, where it will be showcased alongside the production version of the i8 hybrid supercar. The two models kick off a new ‘i’ family of cars that could eventually include an i4 coupe and i5 saloon.
